Diagnosing our heart idols is a crucial step in the Gospel Story, because if we do not see how our hearts are feeding on the wrong things we cannot find the sustaining nourishment of God.
Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. ~Romans 1:22-24
Most of us, in our culture, feed one of these three idols
–Last Sunday, Whitney Sturge provided “The Welcome” …folks felt she captured well the mission and vision of Waypoint and so we wanted to share her words of why her family comes to Waypoint.
My family and I have been coming to Waypoint for a little over a year now. I’ll never forget the ending to one of Wes’ sermons when we had just started coming here. He was talking to the youth of the church and said, “I love getting coffee with adults, but I also really love to go get ice cream. I am not just their pastor, but also your pastor.”
We left church that day saying that’s a great mindset for a minister to have. The very next day, we went to T.C.B.Y. While there, we looked over and there was Wes, having ice cream with a high school student. We realized that this wasn’t just a mindset; Wes was serious when he said he wanted to be the youth’s minster as well as the parents’.
Well…We have a 3.5 year-old and a 1 year-old, and it’s so important to us that they feel like it isn’t just their parents’ church, but that they would be able to have a relationship with their church as well. From that moment on, we knew that Waypoint would be a great fit for us.
So, now when friends ask us, where do you go to church? I say Waypoint.
Then they ask, where is that? I say…it’s across from the sewer. Their next question is “What is Waypoint?” Knowing full and well they need the typical demoninational answer, I love to keep going after that and say Waypoint’s goal is to equip you to be able share the gospel in your normal, everyday life wherever that may be. We can bring a little bit of church to our community. As we have gotten more and more involved and gotten to know more of the people that go to this church, we have seen first hand that these people aren’t just about a mindset, they are real, authentic and mean what they say. We are so grateful to be a part of this church, and thankful for everyone in it!
Join us Sunday as we start our new series on the book of Exodus. Through-out the fall we will be exploring how the story of Exodus gives us a taste of the RESCUE God will do through Jesus Christ.
